Grim's Fairy Tales

Post  Remus Lupin on March 24th 2010, 8:10 pm

I found a 1930s copy of Grim's Fairy Tales in an antique store and bought it for 4 dollars. I LOVE these stories. I'm only about half way through the book, 356 pages, and I have to be careful because it's falling apart badly. There's even illustrations in it!

I really like how they tell the fairy tales. A lot of the times the stories end differently than what we're used to hearing. Mostly because Disney's taken a lot of them and made them all happy ended. And for the most part they generally do end happily...there's just a lot more bad stuff in them.

Take for instance Snow White. In the Disney movie (which I've never really liked anyways) Snow White gets saved by the prince and the evil step mother dies from what, falling off a cliff or something? I can't remember, haven't seen that movie in ages, but it's not like it was a disturbingly violent death.
In the original tale though Snow White is saved by the prince and they get married. The step mother goes to the wedding only because the mirror tells her that this new queen is more fairer than she. When she gets to the wedding she immediately recognizes Snow White and freezes in terror. Everyone finds out what the step mother tried to do to Snow White. They strap red hot iron shoes to her feet and force her to dance until she can't anymore and falls down dead.

Isn't that lovely? haha...oh boy.

Wasn't the original story of Sleeping Beauty that Aurora fell asleep and the prince made it into the tower and raped her. Then she went through a full pregnancy and birth then one of her children, while trying to feed, sucked the spindle from her finger?

I don't know if it was Grimm but that's what I've heard

Hmm...I don't know. Their Sleeping Beauty story in here 'Briar Rose' isn't like that so maybe there's another version?

I've seen 'The Brother's Grimm' so many times. I LOVE that movie!

Okay my darling father just emailed me this and I nearly died laughing.....

Tam's Daddy wrote:Once upon a time, a Prince asked a beautiful Princess..... 'Will you marry
me?'

The Princess said, NO!!!'

And the Prince lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and went
fishing and hunting and played golf and drank beer and scotch and had tons
of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he
wanted.

The End

I have a book with all of the Grimm's Fairy Tales inside it.
Sleeping Beauty is not named Aurora in the actually fairy tale.
She is named Rosamund or Briar Rose.
The original name, dated 1634, was Talia.

But I like Rosamund or Briar Rose.
The book I have: Rosamund.

She does not get raped or anything.
The stories are actually really short.
It's similar to the Disney version, except there are 13 WISE women and one of them is the uninvited 13th woman who places the curse on Rosamund. Rosamund and the entire castle fall into a deep sleep for one hundred years and huge thorns grow around the castle for no man to get through. After one hundred years have passed, a prince is able to get through the thorns because the curse is wearing off. When he gets to the castle, everyone is still asleep, he finds Rosamund and kisses her because she's SOOOOO pretty. Than, she wakes up and they wed.

The End.

Cinderella was far better in my opinion.
I rather like the True Bride too. The Pink was alright I guess. I'm not even halfway through my book. It's 730 pages of awesome, though.

hmm...i really want to look up all the different versions of some of the tales. My Lit. professor wants me to take the 'Fairy Tales and Feminism' class next semester cause he thinks I'd really enjoy it. So I may...I'd love to be able to read fairy tales and analyze things.

I cried like a baby when I read the original... the only time I've cried that hard when reading a book was when Snape died... then I cried even harder....
